The Practice
Maren Soleil is a contemporary visual artist working across painting, printmaking, and object-making. Her practice is grounded in the study of texture, residue, and the slow accumulation of mark — a language developed through extended periods of observation and quiet studio work.
Based between London and the coast of Brittany, her work has been exhibited in gallery spaces across Europe and held in private collections internationally.

Archive · Three Series
A practice built on sustained observation, material inquiry, and the slow accumulation of mark. Three series, each a distinct mode of attention.
Series 01 / 2024
A sequence of large-scale paintings investigating the geological language of accumulated material — layers of pigment deposited, eroded, and re-deposited over months of working and returning to each surface.
Series 02 / 2023
Encaustic works on panel that explore the boundary between presence and disappearance. Warm wax and pigment meet cold panel surface — the edge becomes the site of meaning.
Series 03 / 2022
Works on paper made during a residency on the Breton coast. Sparse, delicate compositions that use graphite and diluted gouache to study light across open, flat terrains.
Series 01 / 2024
Sediment began with a question about time — specifically, whether time could be made visible through paint rather than depicted. Each canvas in this series was worked and reworked over a period of many months; pigment was laid down, allowed to cure, scraped back, re-built, and re-scraped.
The resulting surfaces carry a geological quality — evidence of process made physical. There is no attempt to erase the past states of the painting; instead, they accumulate. The work is interested in residue as a form of honesty.

Solo Exhibition · Upcoming
New large-scale works from the Sediment series alongside a suite of works on paper. The exhibition traces the artist's sustained engagement with surface, time, and material accumulation across two bodies of work made in parallel.
Group Exhibition · Past
A group exhibition exploring the aesthetics of stillness and motion in contemporary painting. Featuring six artists working in paint, wax, and slow photography. Works from the Threshold series were shown alongside new collaborators.
Residency & Open Studio · Past
A six-week residency on the northern coast of Brittany, resulting in the Pale Ground series. The studio was opened to the public for a single afternoon on the final day — an informal showing of work in progress alongside field sketches and material studies.
Objects & Editions
Limited works, printed editions, and objects made in close relation to the studio practice. Each item is produced in small quantities and connects directly to a series or exhibition.
